🎃 How Summerween Came to Be
The idea really took off when the animated show Gravity Falls featured a Summerween episode in 2012. In the episode, the town celebrates a full Halloween-style event in the summer, complete with jack-o'-melons (carved watermelons), costumes, and a monster called the Summerween Trickster.
That episode inspired a wave of real-life Summerween parties, especially among kids and fans of the show! Here is why it has taken off since then.
It’s Popular at Camps, Schools & Parties
Since summer is filled with camps, family reunions, and outdoor fun, people started adding spooky themes to their events:
-
It gives kids a chance to wear their costumes again!
-
Haunted scavenger hunts
-
Spooky crafts & “monster punch”
-
Trick-or-treating down the hallways at camp or even in tents!
It’s All About Fun, Not Fear
Summerween is usually less spooky, more silly: sunglasses on skeletons, beach ball eyeballs, watermelon jack-o'-lanterns, and poolside witches sipping fruit punch. 👻🩴
It’s Grown Into a Mini Movement
Today, you’ll find families decorating their porches in July, carving pineapples and melons, and even holding Summerween-themed birthday parties. Um hello! I love having an October birthday!
Sleepover Friends love Summerween because they get to stay awake and go trick or treating!
